Town of Ladysmith holds annual spring cleanup

Tuesday, April 22 is International Earth Day and it also marks the start of Ladysmith’s annual Spring Cleanup. It might be a coincidence, but both events share a common goal: helping to keep our corner of the planet clean.
Spring Cleanup is a great opportunity for residents to clear out unwanted household clutter.
The clean-up runs until Monday, April 28. Items will be picked up on residents’ regular curbside collection days. According to the town’s website, the regular contractor, Waste Connections, will collect oversized items as part of the usual service.
Acceptable “extra” items include wood or fabric-covered furniture, washers, dryers, stoves, barbecues, carpets, rugs, toys, bicycles and mattresses. For health and safety reasons, mattresses must be fully sealed in plastic and taped shut.
“All items must be placed at the curb the day before your regular collection day,” the town said. Items not included on the approved list will not be picked up.
A town spokesperson said the event typically collects around 45 tons of residential debris and costs approximately $10,000 to run. For those who miss the pick-up or have unaccepted items, the Peerless Road Recycling Centre is an option. It’s now on summer hours: Wednesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
