My husband and I moved to Ladysmith in March 2023. As with many others, we brought along a number of items that we didn’t need, so I donated them to the Thrift Store. At the same time, a friendly neighbour who enjoys volunteering at the Thrift Store suggested that I should become a volunteer. She said it would also help me get to know people.
By October of that year, I was a once-a-week volunteer in receiving. When I felt that I had a good idea of how receiving worked, I moved over to housewares, where I still spend my Tuesday afternoons. I have always been active in the communities in which I have lived. I enjoy giving back to my community. Some of my volunteering was spent with Women’s Centres, Transition Houses, Associations for the Mentally Challenged, and political and labour organizations.
Most—but not all—of my working years were spent in the public school system, working with special needs students from kindergarten to grade twelve. I love spending time with my family, enjoy working in my yard and reading (not nearly enough time doing that), and meeting new people.
I have truly enjoyed my time at the Thrift Store. I have been welcomed by the other volunteers and staff alike. I know that I have lots more to learn about the Auxiliary and about being the Secretary, and I am looking forward to all of it.
