Today, the Ladysmith Health Care Auxiliary presented a $30,000 cheque to the Ladysmith Resources Centre Association to support their Early Years Program and other essential community services—like Adventures in Early Literacy, Dads Drop-In, Mother Goose, Born Healthy, Poverty Reduction, and Volunteer Counselling.

For over a century, the Ladysmith Health Care Auxiliary has exemplified what it means to be rooted in community and driven by compassion. Since 1912, this vibrant organization has grown from a small group of determined women to a powerhouse of over 250 dedicated volunteers. Each year, they tirelessly give their time, talents, and hearts—raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to support health and wellness programs throughout the Central Island region.

Tuesday, April 22 is International Earth Day and it also marks the start of Ladysmith’s annual Spring Cleanup. It might be a coincidence, but both events share a common goal: helping to keep our corner of the planet clean.

According to an analysis by Business Insider, fashion production comprises 10% of total global carbon emissions, as much as the emissions generated by the European Union. The industry dries up water sources and pollutes rivers and streams, while 85% of all textiles go to dumps each year. Even washing clothes releases 500,000 tons of microfibres into the ocean each year, the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles.

We are lucky to live in a community as caring as Ladysmith. Just how caring is reflected in a long history of philanthropic organizations in the town. To understand the origin of these organizations, we must understand the social context at the time they were formed.
